Helpful hints in writing grant objectives

Objectives – Something toward which effort is directed: an aim, goal or end of action.

A well-defined objective will typically answer the following:

  • What is the direction of the change/what action is taking place?
  • Who is the target audience for each objective?
  • What is the time frame needed to solve the problem by implementing each objective?
  • What is the measurement?

Tip: Use transitive verbs such as reduce, increase or expand to introduce each objective. Use action verbs like conduct, analyze, provide, or design, if the action is an end in itself. (For example: Conduct a survey of all fourth grade students…)

Sample language:
Increase student participation in the Wild for Reading Program by 25% by the end of the first semester.
Provide fundraising training to 95% of the Board by September 2009.

As you can see by the examples, objectives can be stated in one sentence. See next page for worksheet.
