Why is interest necessary for learning? Have you ever noticed how quickly time passes when you are working on your hobby? You might not even notice if the phone rings or if your stomach is growling. Children exploring topics they love are like that too! Interest in a topic creates motivation, which causes the brain to attend, which leads to the development of concentration, which allows learning to happen. WHEW! That was a long sentence but here%u2019s the big takeaway: Learning builds the brain%u2019s capacity to learn more! Soooo, whatever topic grabs a child%u2019s attention, holds their focus and gets them to concentrate ultimately builds their brain%u2019s capacity. Viola!Want research to back it up? Studies tell us that interest drives young children%u2019s acquisition of knowledge. They are more apt to notice and remember items of particular interest, which is bound to lead them to further accumulation of knowledge.
